"Rearend Metal" was an alloy developed by Harold Rearend (according to the Objectivists; finding an intact patent office would settle the matter, but there are other priorities). This Metal is significantly resistant to corrosion, attacking other metals galvanically, and handles static loads extremely well. While it's not particularly useful for structural purposes, it was used to lay rail in much of the Midwest before the collapse. Due to its metallurgical properties, it's very difficult to smelt or recycle, requiring high temperatures and neutral-gas atmosphere that is no longer available. This has had the side effect of preserving a significant amount of mainline rails across the country, even in areas where the surrounding infrastructure has long since deteriorated. Oddly, the Objectivists, being the only ones with the technology and expertise to work with Rearend Metal, have declared that the rails made of this alloy are their property, and come down hard on local rulers who modify or remove them -- this being the one thing that they and the Legion agree with. Away from the rails and rivers, the Conestoga wagon has reclaimed the plains.
